INSTALLATION OF PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS IN THE PHARMACY AND MEDICAL ANALYSIS LABORATORY

Thanks to funding from the NGO Manos Unidas (Spain) and the NGO BEGECA (Germany), work to install photovoltaic panels in the pharmacy and medical analysis laboratory of the Mama ti Fatima Medical Complex will begin in January 2024.

The total cost of the project, borne equally by the two NGOs, is 49,044 euros (32,163,500 FCFA), with a completion date scheduled for June 2024.

One of the main problems in the Central African Republic is the lack of access to electricity. Only 14.3% of the population has access to electricity, rising to 32.1% in the case of the urban population (World Bank data, 2020).

This means that, in the case of Bangui, the country's capital, the electricity supply does not exceed 8 hours a day, and this on an intermittent basis. This is a serious handicap for the operation of the pharmacy and the medical analysis laboratory. Not only for the proper functioning of the electronic equipment in both facilities, but also because of the significant limitation on the hours during which the two services are available to the various health centres in the city that depend on them, and to the public.

Being able to operate 24 hours a day by installing photovoltaic panels in both facilities is a great step forward for which we are very grateful to the NGOs Manos Unidas and BEGECA, because without their financial support it would not have been possible to achieve this.

CONSTRUCTION OF A WELL AND INSTALLATION OF A WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM FOR THE PHARMACY AND THE CLINICAL ANALYSIS LABORATORY.

Thanks to funding from the Veneto Region (Italy), work has begun on the construction of a well and the installation of a permanent supply of drinking water for the pharmacy and the clinical analysis laboratory.

Supplying the medical complex with quality drinking water without interruptions is a priority for the proper functioning of both facilities, especially given the poor sanitary conditions in much of the country's territory: access to drinking water only reaches 59% of the population (this rate depends on the place of residence, and varied from 67% in urban areas to 46% in rural areas), water supply is usually provided through poorly treated wells, there is a high rate of waterborne and fecal-oral diseases (typhoid fever, intestinal parasites, etc. ) due to the lack of sanitation systems that separate drinking water from water coming from latrines, etc.

This is why this water supply project is so important to be able to provide quality health care, a supply that would not have been possible without the financial contribution of the Veneto Region to which we are very grateful.
